Lottery odds are not an estimate — they fall straight out of the combinatorics. Pick a draw or enter any format, and this counts every possible ticket.

A EuroMillions ticket is one of 139,838,160 possible lines. Buying one line every week, the expected wait for a jackpot is about 2.7 million years.

What this figure is

  • It is the jackpot only. Smaller prize tiers are far more likely, and they are the reason the advertised "1 in 13" style odds you sometimes see are so much shorter — those count any prize at all, including the cost of the ticket back.
  • Buying more lines helps exactly as much as it sounds. Ten lines make it ten times likelier, which for EuroMillions still leaves odds of about 1 in 14 million.
  • Numbers have no memory. Overdue numbers, hot numbers and birthday patterns change nothing — though avoiding common patterns does reduce the chance of sharing a jackpot if you win.
  • Draws return roughly half of what is staked. Most national lotteries pay out around 50% in prizes; the rest funds good causes, tax and operating costs. As a wager it is priced far more steeply than a casino game.
